What do you mean I have all the answers?

Coaching as a client-led process

A classic tongue-in-cheek question that many coaches ask their clients in response to a question from the client is: “Great question… what’s the answer?”

Your initial reaction may be to think that this type of response from a coach is evidence that the coach is nothing more than a smart arse, is lost and trying to buy time by putting it back on the client or is just a crappy coach.

Admittedly, the coach who asks this question may be a smart arse… however, there is more to it!

key characteristics of coaching

A fundamental principle of coaching is that it is a client-led process. Coaching operates on the premise that the client is the expert in their own life, and the coach's role is to facilitate the client's self-discovery and problem-solving. Inherent in this type of client-centred approach are particular principles:

  1. Client Expertise: Coaches view clients as experts in their own lives. Clients have unique knowledge, experiences, and insights that are valuable in addressing their challenges and goals.

  2. Questioning and Inquiry: Coaches use open-ended and thought-provoking questions to encourage clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and goals more deeply. These questions are designed to help clients gain clarity and perspective.

  3. Belief in the Client: Coaches have a strong belief in their clients' potential and capacity for growth. This belief is foundational to the coaching relationship and can empower clients to take action.

  4. Empowerment: The aim of coaching is to empower clients to find their own solutions and make choices that align with their values and goals. Coaches do not provide answers but help clients tap into their own wisdom.

  5. Self-Discovery: Through the coaching process, clients often discover insights, strengths, and resources they may not have been aware of previously. This self-discovery is a powerful tool for personal growth and development.

  6. Accountability: Coaches may also hold clients accountable for the goals they set during coaching sessions. This accountability can help clients stay on track and take action toward their desired outcomes.

In essence, coaching is about helping clients unlock their potential, overcome obstacles, and make meaningful changes in their lives. It is a collaborative partnership between the coach and the client, with the client taking the lead in defining their goals and finding their own answers. This client-led approach is a key element of effective coaching.
